100 years old and still bowling in Swift Current
John Friesen may not be a young man, but he still lives his life youthfully. Having turned 100 years old on September 27, 2025, he still lives in his own home, gardens in his backyard, drives himself around, and bowls in the Social Bowl Seniors Bowling League. Friesen has been bowling for close to 20 years, by his own recollection, having joined with his wife, Suzy Friesen. "My wife and I enjoyed it very much," said Friesen. Up until Suzy passed away nearly five years ago, he went with her every week. To this day, he still goes bowling, although he admits to dearly missing her more and more as time goes on. "She was the best lady in the world," said Friesen. "I am realizing more and more all the time now how good she was. Now, I'm just looking forward to a time where I'll go up to meet her in glory, and we'll walk the streets of gold." The centrarian remains very active, even outside bowling. He works at the MCC Furniture Store one day of the week, fixing vacuum cleaners and other appliances. He also visits care homes like Cypress House on Wednesday mornings before going bowling. "Monday mornings, I go to The Meadows and entertain the younger old people," laughed Friesen. On Thursdays, he still enjoys participating in the Alliance Church community bible study. Friesen admits that he has started to slow down in his bowling ability. "My average is only around 120, 130 now," said Friesen. "Not what it used to be." Bowling while using his cane is a little cumbersome, but he can still find strikes down at the pins. Earlier this year, he recorded five in a single game. Frisen celebrated his 100th birthday at the Swift Current Alliance Church, surrounded by 140 of his friends, his co-workers from MCC, and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. There was even a cake for him to blow the candles out on. "I said, if you have 100 candles, I won't blow them," laughed Friesen. He says the secret to living as long as he has is to stay active, have a good partner beside you like his Suzy, and not indulge too much in birthday cake. "For breakfast, I only have cornflakes and a banana," shared Friesen. "Been that way for 25 years now. I don't need coffee, unless I am sitting with friends. I just like to eat healthy, nothing special." If you see Friesen around, make sure to compliment his Toronto Blue Jays cap, which he received for his birthday from his grandson.
