I can remember when Ray Boughen was strongly encouraged to run for a 3rd term as our mayor in Moose Jaw.  He didn't.  He wouldn't.  He's of the belief that we should have limits in place for the length of political terms.

Most Canadians agree.

A public opinion poll from Angus Reid Institute found 54% of us say term limits for elected politicians are necessary.  Most believe "a restriction of two four-year terms" would be best and almost half "of all respondents say people who are sworn in as prime ministers and provincial premiers should serve no longer than eight total years in those roles."

Some of those who disagreed argued that "having no term limits allows elected politicians to spend more time learning...which creates...connections between them and their constituents."

Others who say term limits are necessary believe limits would "prevent politicians from building up too much power" and that "Turnover is good for democracy because new voices can bring new ideas."
