Have you ever wondered what would happen if you or someone you love has an emergency while out of minutes on a prepaid phone? If you find yourself needing to call 911 and you don't have cellular coverage, there is still a way. As long there is a mobile phone nearby, it can be used anyway to reach emergency services.

"If you do have a cellular phone, as long as you're within a coverage area, you can dial 911, even if you are not on a cellular plan, and if you had a prepaid plan, if you were without minutes, you could still dial 911 if you were at a zero balance on your phone," said Michelle Englot, Director of Corporate Communications with SaskTel. "It is recognized that phones can be used in emergency situations to dial 9-1-1 and they can be programmed that way."

"The important thing people to realize is that if they are traveling, there may be coverage gaps and things like that where they're not in cellular service areas," she noted. "You do need to take precautions. We do have tips on our website in terms of how to handle calling 911 in emergency situations."
