A new bylaw being proposed by the City of Moose Jaw could allow residents to use shipping containers as a long-lasting storage facility.

"Currently the bylaw only allows for shipping containers to be on a commercial property for 45 days, and on an industrial for 90 days. The new bylaw will allow that to be a permanent structure as an accessory building to that property," explained Michelle Sanson, Director of Planning for the City of Moose Jaw.

Sanson noted that in her time, she doesn't ever remember there being any complaints regarding shipping containers under the current law; however, the City wanted to update the act.

She said not everyone will be allowed to place the structures on their land as there will be criteria to meet that will adjust from property to property.

"There would be some restrictions, depending on how much land they have, parking requirements, and how big their buildings are... every individual property would have an different requirement."

The new bylaw will only affect industrial or commercial land. The containers will not be allowed on residential property.
