Today looks a lot like Christmas for some, whether there is snow or not. That's because today is Ukrainian Christmas.

The reason they celebrate Christmas on a day different from the December 25th is because of differing calendars.

Eastern European countries, like Ukraine, followed the Julian Calendar, which places Christmas on or around January 7th each year. This calendar predates the Gregorian calendar, which is followed in Western Europe and here in Canada and places Christmas on the 25th.

Father Yurij Lazurko of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Moose Jaw says that with time changing, not as many people celebrate Ukrainian Christmas anymore. In fact, his parish recently voted to celebrate on the 25th as a church.

"There were some people that used to celebrate on the old calendar, but they either moved away or passed away," Lazurko said. "People might be doing some celebrating privately with family and friends, but nothing officially as far as the parish is concerned."

Lazurko will be celebrating Ukrainian Christmas this year with his daughter in Ontario.
