Saskatchewan NDP leader Ryan Meili was back in this hometown Wednesday afternoon to discuss jobs in the city and the province.

Meili voiced his concerns that more and more Moose Javians working at Crown Corporations are finding themselves out of work under the Saskatchewan Party government.

"They've taken hundreds of jobs out of this province, out of this city, jobs out of SaskPower, out of SaskTel and SaskEnergy. They've made it harder for Moose Jaw folks to make ends meet."

He also took on the new SaskPower power plant that is being built in Moose Jaw.

The 350-megawatt facility is expected to employ 250 workers per year with a peak employment of 500 workers during construction.

Burns & McDonnell Canada Ltd. and Kiewit Construction Services have been shortlisted to build the plant.

"We know there is a SaskPower power plant set to be built here in Moose Jaw and they are down to two proponents, both American companies and one of those proponents is Burns & McDonnell," Meili said.

"Burns & McDonnell built the power plant in Swift Current. Only 20 per cent of the money for that project went to Saskatchewan companies at all. Only 44 per cent, not even half, of the workers on that job were from Saskatchewan."

The power plant is expected to go online in 2024 and employ 25 full-time workers.
