A dog from Moose Jaw is in the running to be 'America's Favourite Pet'.

Lisa Parker's 11-month-old Pomeranian, Guinness, has been in the North America-wide competition since January and has made it all the way to the quarter-finals.

"It started with several thousands of dogs, and Guinness is now in the quarter-finals, so he has gone through four rounds and has finished first in all of them," says Parker, "Now he is in the quarter-finals and is going against 16 dogs this week, and he has to finish in first by Thursday night to move on."

Voting for the competition is open for anyone anywhere in the world. You can vote once per day for free, but every extra vote on top of that requires a donation to PAWS; an American-based organization that focuses on helping injured dogs or relocating pets that are in need of a new home.

And according to Parker, the main prize for the contest comes with more than just the title of America's Favourite Pet.

"The contest is put on by the Kong dog toy company. The first-place prize is $5,000 from them, and then he would also get a photo shoot and article done in Dogster Magazine, which would also pay another $5,000, so $10,000 in total."

Parker says they already have some plans for the prize money if they are able to win.

"If Guinness does win, my husband and I have decided that we will be making a sizeable donation to the Moose Jaw Humane Society."
