It's a reality today.  It happens every winter on the Canadian prairies.  Extreme Cold Warnings are issued when the wind chill factor hits -40 or worse.  That's also the threshold for local-area school buses to be canceled and, in fact, they were early this morning.

Did you know the wind chill index was first developed in 1945 by some Antarctic explorers?  It was 22 years later that human experiments in Siberia found a way to measure the onset of frostbite on the tips of people's noses.

It all reminds me of a story the late Al Wyntor told us on CHAB many years ago.  Al was the voice of a feature called "Online to Music Row", keeping us up to date on all the country music news in Nashville.

When he was a young disc jockey and delivering the forecast one cold winter, he was including the "wind chill factor".  He took a call from a listener who said she had a question.

She said, "I understand it's cold out but what I don't understand is why it's always colder at the windshield factory.  Can you tell me why?"
