So, when I was in high school, attending Central Collegiate, getting detention was punishment. We didn't just get summoned to a quiet room to do homework after hours.

When I was in grade 9 we'd get "Fitness Club".  It wasn't a club anyone wanted to be in.  You'd have to run lengths in the gym and do sit-ups and push-ups...until you were exhausted.  After that was deemed cruel and unusual, detention would mean you'd have to help the caretakers clean the school.

There were a couple of the fellas who were pretty tough on us, making us scrub floors and wash garbage cans.  It was brutal sometimes.

But there was one, young caretaker who didn't take the detention punishment too seriously.  He didn't need anyone to help him do his work.  If he was on the after school shift, detention was a breeze.  We'd just sit and visit.  He liked to talk about cars.  I didn't, really but, it sure beat scrubbing the floors.  We became fast friends.

His name was Doug Smith.  He passed away this week.  Cancer took him at age 59.  Rest in peace, brother.
