The carbon tax will be applied retroactively to the months of January to March on SaskPower bills, and that will start to be applied to April bills.

The issue has arisen because of how SaskPower is classified under the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, which goes into effect in January.

The additional tax won’t be applied all in April, however. SaskPower said it will be spread out over the final nine months of the year.

SaskPower didn’t have the final details as to how the tax would be applied to the different power sources such as coal as of late December.

Saskpower has estimated it will cost $18 more in total for 2019 but will be more as the carbon tax goes up in subsequent years.

SaskEnergy won’t have the same issues, as they are classified differently under the act.
