Thanksgiving often looks different for many of us, and for some people who face discrimination from their families, it can be a difficult time of year.

That's why yesterday, Moose Jaw Pride held a thanksgiving potluck for the community's LGBTQ+ community as well as their friends, family, and allies. The executive director of Moose Jaw Pride, Taylor Carlson explains this is so important.

"Many [queer] folks have found themselves having to create their own families over the holidays. To find that friendship, companionship and support that they may not have access to otherwise."

For this reason, Carlson says that potlucks have been a fixture of the LGBTQ+ community for many years and displays its strength and uniqueness.

"Any marginalized group of people, especially those who may face some sort of discrimination from their own cultural community, or from their actual family, being able to create their own family wherever they are is a really powerful thing. I think it really speaks to the perseverance and strength of queer people."

Carlson said his hope for the event was simply for Moose Jaw's queer community to have a chance to be involved in their larger family of friends and allies.
