The Opposition NDP were in Moose Jaw Monday, meeting with residents, Holy Trinity Catholic School Division and the Prairie South School Division to discuss the provincial budget which was released last week.

Carla Beck, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, says they decided to make a stop in Moose Jaw after hearing some concern from residents.

“We know that there were some concerns from people in Moose Jaw based on the lack of investment in Moose Jaw that we’ve seen in this budget. Everyone in Moose Jaw would know that they’ve seen local taxes go up to pay for things like water. There were hopes that there might be some money for schools in Moose Jaw and of course that didn’t materialize.”

“We know that last year's budget took $54 million dollars out of classrooms across the province. $30 million which they promised to put back into education, we’ll only see $17.5 of that in this budget year and that doesn’t even come close to covering the increased costs that schools are experiencing.”

Beck says she's still hearing from residents about Wakamow losing funding last year as well.

“The funding for Wakamow being taken away last year came as a huge surprise for the people of Moose Jaw, and maybe a bigger surprise to see their two MLAs stand up and vote for that cut, despite what they were hearing, concerns about pulling the funding for this jewel of the city”.
