The City of Moose Jaw released its “Let’s Talk Trash" campaign, aimed at educating residents about waste and recycling initiatives.

The City will provide all residents with an informative brochure.

Some main key points of the brochure include:

  •  Hesitate, Then Separate – It only takes a moment to figure out which items belong in the blue recycling bin and which items go in the green waste bin.
  • Make The Best of a Bag Situation: With single-use plastic bags on the way out, we tell you the best shopping bag for your environmental buck.
  • How to handle Household Hazardous Waste.

The City has also created a series of videos that demonstrate how easy it is to handle your waste and recycling. The videos also bust some of the most common myths surrounding the City’s collection program.

According to the brochure, over 75% of green bin material taken to the Moose Jaw landfill can actually be diverted to other streams.

Director of Public Works and Utilities, Darrin Stephanson, talks about different ways to reduce waste.

"Re-purpose if you can, be cognizant in what you are purchasing and where those streams are coming from and the amount of packaging you may get in items," says Stephanson.

Stephanson, explains some items that many people think belong in the blue bin, but really belong in the green bin.

"It's usually plastic, a lot of the small plastic. I think people do not know which plastic can be recycled. The clamshell plastic is not recyclable," says Stephanson.

He says plastic labelled two through seven can be recycled, just check the bottom of the plastic container for the number.
