At the regular meeting of Moose Jaw City Council on Tuesday, October 15, the City adopted a new strategic plan.

The plan essentially outlines the desired cultural tone that the City would like to see guiding both municipal government and its interactions with residents.

“This plan is a result of a planning session with council and our strategic leadership team in June of 2018 with Doug Griffiths, author of ’13 Ways to Kill Your Community’,” explained City Manager Jim Puffalt. “All communities strive to be a good place to live, work and raise a family. We wanted to identify new opportunities, actions and tactics that will advance Moose Jaw into the future in a successful, non-traditional way. This strategic plan outlines ways in which to reach our goal while building upon our values.”

Here are just a few of the strategic plan's core components:

• We will have the courage to try new things, and not be afraid that action could lead to failure.
• We will not be afraid of being challenged by the public, or to challenge the community.
• We will be forward-thinking and innovative in identifying problems and finding solutions.
• In any meetings, public or private, we will leave our negativity and our egos at the door.
• We agree the past will remain in the past, unless it is something to be celebrated and appreciated.
• We operate as one family and one community with the goal of making Moose Jaw better and preparing it for the future.

Mayor Fraser Tolmie said the plan will act as a cohesive structure to outline our community's core values.

"We want people to be able to help solve problems within the community, and it's going to take time. So that's the culture we want to change. You've got to start somewhere, you've got to talk about the culture."
