On her first official trip across Saskatchewan, Governor General Julie Payette made two separate stops in Moose Jaw Friday.

On day two of her three-day tour, the Governor General stopped at École Ducharme to speak with students, before making her way to 15 Wing for the Snowbirds final show of the season.

Governor General Payette actually has roots at the base, spending two years of her training there, logging in over 1,300 hours of flight time, including 600 hours on high-performance jet aircraft.

"I spent two years here training as a pilot and even though most of the people who trained with me in the nineties are not here anymore it's still home," she said. "I lived on base, and most of the students, we live on base. Whenever we went on a trip, it's [about] the kind of skills and training but also the comradery that stays with you for the rest of your life. So when I say I come home, I mean it."

After completing her training here, Payette moved on to serve as chief astronaut for the Canadian Space Agency from 2000 to 2007.

Being able to take in the show and see the Snowbirds, our Governor General really appreciates the skill of the Snowbirds and the training done at 15 Wing. Formation flying and the absolute precision that comes with it is all about teamwork, which is important to Payette even in her new position.

"I am still the same person I've always been," she said. "I'm a proud Canadian, I'm a team player, and I work well with people and now I have this extraordinary privilege of being able to criss-cross the country, to meet folks and to do that with a constitutional role as well, which is very important for our country. So I take this very seriously and I'm looking forward to four more great years."

Also, Payette helped make Reg Harrison, a 97-year-old World War 2 pilot who flew in 13 allied bombing missions in Europe, an honorary Snowbird pilot.

On Thursday, the Governor General's first stop was at the Saskatchewan legislature in Regina, where she spent some time in the capital. Saturday, to finish her tour, Payette will be heading to Saskatoon as well as Humbolt, where she will go visit the Broncos memorial and take in a game with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team.
