In a number of locations across Saskatchewan, ferries are in operation for much of the year across bodies of water. Now, all of the ferries and barges are in drydock for the winter, with the ferry at Riverhurst being the last to stop operation for the year, shutting down this past Monday.

With the ferries ceasing operation for the winter, the Saskatchewan government is reminding the public that there is a risk when partaking in on-ice activity, including walking and driving on it. They advise people to check ice thickness before going on the ice on any body of water.

In total, there are 12 ferries, and one barge that are used, and they are in operation from April to November, but operations vary due to the weather, and whether or not the crossing is frozen.
