"Knock knock."

"Who's there?"

"Nobody."

"Nobody who?"

"............"

Cue the laughs. Kallum Anderson's "knock knock" joked knocked over his competition Wednesday morning at St. Mary School. The Grade 1 student competed against a representative from each class at the south hill elementary school during a school assembly.

The school chose to study and celebrate the art of comedy during Literacy Week, which runs through Saturday.

"There's a lot of research that says teaching children how to tell a joke is great for building fluency," explained St.Mary Literacy Coach Stacey Moser, who says they have been studying how to write and deliver jokes effectively.

"Our kids have been reading jokes like crazy, they've been sharing them, writing them down...rehearsing them. The more that they see them, hear them, practice them..their fluency is coming.  It's a hard thing to tell a joke the right way."

Moser also says that it hasn't just been the obvious "class clowns" that have been invigorated by the project.

"Some of the students that are a bit more shy, they've come out of their shell a little bit.  There are some great little comedians in our classrooms."

Here is the how the competition unfolded Wednesday morning.
