Graduation is here for the grade 12 students in Moose Jaw, but some schools have already held their celebrations.

Cornerstone Christian School already held their cap and gown ceremony on June 14th and grad banquet on the 15th, where their co-valedictorians, Mikaela Godard and Grace Geradts, gave their final speech to their class.

Both Godard and Geradts finished the within decimal points of each other. They went into finals with 97% averages, making them their graduating classes valedictorians.

Throughout high schools, Geradts was apart of their school's musicals and basketball team, she said it gave her the chance to meet some of the younger students at Cornerstone.

She did make high school about marks, to a point where her parents asked her to not worry about them so much and spend more time with her friends. She did manage to find a balance though, and with her brother, who was also a valedictorian, helping her with her homework, it was easy for her to have great marks and spend time with her friends.

For Godard, she focused a lot on the arts instead of the marks. She was a part of Cornerstone's musicals, one acts, and choir.

Besides marks, both girls also shared a favourite teacher, Mr. Behrns. He taught both girls math and both of them said he made math easier and more fun. Geradts said Mrs. Flamand was also a favourite of hers since she helped her so much in chemistry.

Both Godard and Geradts made Cornerstone their elementary school. Geradts made the switch over from Sunningdale Elementary school, and Godard came from Calgary to Moose Jaw in grade 3.

Now, nine years later, they can hardly believe it went by so fast.

"It feels surreal," Geradts said. "Like, I remember to a moment in grade 10, I was just like 'wow, I can't believe we're in grade 10, we only have two more years of this," and it feels like we're here now and I don't know where the time has went."

Godard shares the feeling with her co-valedictorian.

"It's honestly crazy, it still hasn't quite sank in that we're graduating," she said. "Yeah, this whole year we've been counting down the days 'til grad and it doesn't feel real that we're here tonight."

Both girls will be continuing onto post-secondary school next year in different fields. Godard says she is planning to head to Briercrest College to become a social worker. She was inspired by a missions trip the school took which made her want to help vulnerable people.

Geradts will be going to the University of Regina next semester to study Kinesiology, but she doesn't have an idea of which career to take yet.

Both girls said they had amazing teachers at Cornerstone. The girls want to give a big thank you to them, and their own families, for all the support they have given them during their time in high school.
