Serving the community well dating back to the 1970s, Moose Jaw City Council took time last night to pay tribute to Don Mitchell who is resigning.

Last night was his last meeting after deciding that he needs to be at home with his ailing wife.

Mitchell has served for decades on Council as both Mayor and Councillor - something he felt was an honour.

"I will keep it short in spite of my reputation, but I do want to give public recognition to first of all my colleagues, thank you for your kind and generous words, and to City administration and staff over all the years I've been here."

"I also want to thank the community, I've been part of civic politics since 1972 I think was the first by-election I ran in to. The involvement in the community, their engagement, their concern on issues, their questions have taught me a lot and have given me direction."

"I've been on Council for close to 15 years, spread out over the last 30. It hasn't always been easy but it has been generally rewarding and a great experience and I'm going to miss it. I also want to thank my wife and partner who has provided support for me, and it's my turn now...thank you."

Members of Council then took time to pay tribute to Mitchell.

Mayor Fraser Tolmie: "You have made a difficult but honourable decision to step down, and you do this because of love. As difficult as this is, you have made the right decision to focus on your love."

Councillor Brian Swanson: "Your political fate and mind have been inextricably linked for 30 years now. Without question your commitment to being a representative to the people. At the end of it all every politician has to wonder if it was worth it, especially with respect to family and what one has to go through. I certainly hope you feel that it was worth it."

Councillor Dawn Luhning: "Your passion for this community, your commitment to the citizens and the ability you had to truly listen to citizens I think is something that is very cherished. Thank you for all of your service."

City administration will now work on the details of a by-election to fill the empty seat. This process is expected to take place this fall.
