Recently Canada has been going through a butter shortage.

The Canadian Diary Commission was allowed to import butter from other countries.

They imported four tonnes of butter from other countries such as New Zealand and Ireland but that butter will not be seen in grocery stores as it will be sold to industries like restaurants and bakeries.

"I'm actually quite amazed that the Canadian public seems to be more educated then ever before", says Sylvain Charlebois, a professor of distribution and food policy.

Charlebois says he has never seen the industry receive such an interest but has his thoughts as to why there was a shortage to begin with.

"We need a more loosened regime right now our current management scheme is anything but flexible so obviously if demands changes we need to make sure our mechanisms are adequate in order to address these changes."

Throughout 2015 the butter consumption has increased by three and a half percent according to the Canadian Dairy Commission.
