The Saskatchewan Soccer Association is hosting a free walking soccer trial Saturday at the Yara Centre.

It's a new take on a classic sport that looks to raise the participation level to include more people.

“For people who are a little bit older, or people who have been suffering from injuries in the past and stuff, it’s a really good way for people who have had serious injuries to still be involved in the sport, but not at the full extreme contact level with running and the stuff you see in a typical soccer game,” said Jordan Jeffery with the Moose Jaw Soccer Association

The Sask Soccer Association had a walking soccer festival over the summer in Saskatoon and Jeffery said they were blown away by the participation numbers.

“There were rave reviews about how fun it was and just how many people would come out and be active again who wouldn’t have had the opportunity,” he said.

It's free to play from 2 to 4  p.m. Saturday.

“We’re interested to see what we get,” Jeffery said. “We’re hoping for strong participation. We’re hopeful that we’ll get a good amount of people that we can at least break off into two different groups and have some different games going.”

“We’re hoping this can be a part of our program on a regular basis.”
