Both local figure skating clubs put together strong performances earlier this month at the 2018 Skate Saskatchewan Sectionals in Tisdale.

Ryann Handley with the Moose Jaw Skating Club had the biggest weekend, as she finished in second place in the Novice Women division to secure her third trip to the Skate Canada Challenge.

"I'm super excited, I'm really happy to have made it, it's my third time going, so hopefully from my last two times going, I'll do even better this time," said Handley.

The 17-year-old scored 95.94 points, which was a new personal best, during her two skates at Sectionals, posting a 33.60 in her short program and 62.34 in her free skate. She ended up finishing just 2.31 points behind gold medallist Shallen Bear from the Whitewood Figure Skating Club.

Alyssa Roney, also from the Moose Jaw Skating Club, finished eighth in the Novice Women division at Sectionals.

Handley said that her experience at the past two Skate Canada Challenge events gives her a good base to build off going into her third trip.

"It gets really competitive once you get to the national competitions," she said. "I learned how to better prepare myself and I learned from other skaters how I can improve my own technique."

The Skate Canada Challenge will be held Nov. 28-Dec. 2 in Edmonton.

The Prairie Edge School of Skating had two skaters bring back medals from Sectionals and overall, it was a strong event for the club, according to coach Naiomi Rigetti.

"Everybody did really well, we had five skaters that went, everybody competed in a singles event and had personal beat skates," she said.

The Moose Jaw Skating Club's Lindsay Allen came away with gold in the Juvenile Women (U14) Division, while Camryn Ferguson and Lauren Halverson from Prairie Edge were fifth and seventh, respectively, in that division.

Ferguson also teamed up with Caronport's Aden Fawcett to finish second in the Juvenile Dance division.

"Camryn and Aden surpassed my expectations in the dance event, they don't get a lot of time to train together because they skate in different clubs and they were in first place after the pattern dance event, which has never happened for them, so that was pretty exciting," said Rigetti.

"Camryn had a good performance overall, she ended up placing third in the Saskatchewan Series, which is an accumulation of points at the events that they've done up to Sectionals. Rowan [Gray] also placed third in the Saskatchewan Series and Aden was first, so besides the skates last weekend, they also had some overall results that were great achievements."

Fawcett, who skates with the Caronport Skating Club, picked up an individual gold medal in the Juvenile Men (U14) division.

MJSC's Eric Swalm claimed gold in the Pre-Juvenile Men (U11) division, while Rowan Gray with Prairie Edge came in third.

Tyrae Wiebe and Justine Aitken with MJSC came in 12th and 15th, respectively, in the Pre-Novice Women division.

Prairie Edge’s Kalista Brown came in ninth in the Juvenile Women (U12) division.

Three skaters from MJSC competed in the Pre-Juvenile Women (U11) division, Mitike Cridland came in ninth, Brecon Swalm was 15th, and Rachel Ward was 17th.

Caronport’s Shamus McClanahan finished third in the Pre-Novice Men division, while he also teamed with Rachel Gabor to win the Juvenile Pair division.

Kcena Osiowy and Jordan Gabor from Caronport won the Pre-Juvenile Dance division.
