The Rotary Club of Moose Jaw Wakamow will be planting Canadian flags in lawns in Moose Jaw and Bushell Park this summer with their “Fly the Flag” fundraiser.

Marian Kettlewell, treasurer with the Rotary Club of Moose Jaw Wakamow, is coordinating the fundraiser along with her husband, David.

She said that this has been done by Rotary Clubs in Alberta and British Columbia before, but they believe this is the first time it’s being done in Saskatchewan.

“For a fee of $60, one of our volunteers will come to your house and install a large 3’ X 5’ flag on a 10 ft pole 3 times over the summer - Victoria Day in May, Canada Day in July, and Labour Day in September.”

“It’s really a win-win activity, in that we in our club get to raise funds for the different causes we support, and the subscribers get to have a beautiful Canadian flag in their front yard and show their pride in our country.”

Kettlewell added that volunteers will remove the flags a few days after each of those weekends.

There are a number of options when it comes to flags. You can either sign up for yourself or your business, or you can gift the subscription to someone else to have a flag on their lawn.

“Even if someone wanted to gift a flag for a care home where they might have a family member – if they have permission to do that,” Kettlewell suggested.

When you subscribe for the flags, they ask that you make sure you note if there are any underground water sprinklers. People do not need to be home when volunteers come to install and remove the flags.

Kettlewell said that while you can still subscribe for the remaining installations after the first flags go up in May, they would like anyone currently interested to sign up as soon as possible. “It will help us to determine how many poles and flags we need to purchase.”

Funds raised will be used to help others both locally and internationally. Some local organizations that have received funds from the club in the past include Moose Jaw Transition House, the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, Hunger in Moose Jaw, and the Festival of Words.

International efforts include funding for the eradication of polio, and they give scholarships for children in Guatemala to receive education past Grade 6, as well as funding the building and outfitting of schools in Guatemala.

If you’re interested in signing up for one of the flags, you can find the signup form on the Rotary Club of Moose Jaw Wakamow website.
