West Nile Virus 2: The Second Generation

Get the bug spray because West Nile Virus will soon be on its way.

5 Hills Health Region Medical Health Officer Dr. Mark Vooght says the mosquito that carries the disease has started to show up in our area, but its usually the second generation of culex tarsalis that carries the disease. They are expected to show up in about 2 weeks.

"The important message at this point in time is that with the warmer weather that's expected we are going to have a second breed out of culex tarsalis and those females will likely be loaded with West Nile Virus."

With that in mind, Dr, Vooght is reminding everyone to use precautionary measures from now on when outside, like applying bug spray and wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants.
