The Moose Jaw Warriors scored three goals in the third period and four unanswered in the game as they came from behind to beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-2 on Friday night at Mosaic Place.

Both teams are known for their speed and that was on display throughout the opening period.  The Warriors and Hurricanes were both aggressive in the attacking zone as they looked to move the pucks from the wall to the front of the net.

Lethbridge outshot the Warriors, 8-6, in the opening period, but the Warriors had Noah Gregor and Dryden Hunt both rip shots off the post, however the two sides went in to the first intermission scoreless.

The Warriors weren’t successful at times getting the puck out of their zone early in the second period and the opportunistic Hurricanes capitalized.

At 4:54, Andrew Nielsen broke up a Warriors clearing attempt at the blueline and then put a shot towards the net where Tyler Wong deflected it past Zach Sawchenko.

Three minutes later, the Hurricanes broke up another Warriors clearing attempt and this time Kord Pankewicz took a shot from the blueline, Sawchenko made the initial save, but former Moose Jaw General Cory Millette knocked in the rebound to make it, 2-0.

The Warriors were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the final five minutes of the second period.  While on the power play, Noah Gregor smacked the puck onto goalie Stuart Skinner from the high right crease and the rebound bounced to the top of the Hurricanes crease where Brayden Point smacked in his team leading 17th of the year to make it a one-goal game.

Moose Jaw needed a spark in the third period and it came just over two minutes in.

17-year-old rookie Landon Quinney grabbed the puck in the neutral zone and fought his way across the Hurricanes right line.  The Las Vegas product made his way to the face-off dot where he snapped shot short side that beat Skinner.  Quinney’s goal was the first of his WHL career and it tied the game at two, sparking the Warriors’ comeback.

Approaching the middle of the period, the Warriors found themselves on the power play again.  They moved the puck around the Hurricanes zone quickly, eventually setting up Point for a slapshot inside the right circle that beat Skinner to give the Warriors their first lead of the game.

Moose Jaw added an insurance goal from Dryden Hunt in the final four minutes of the game, completing the comeback and skating to the 4-2 win.

Point led the Warriors with two goals and three points, giving him a WHL-leading 42 points in 17 games this season.

Hunt had a goal and two points, while Gregor finished with two assists and Sawchenko made 30 saves.

Moose Jaw finished 2-for-7 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
