Scrounging through your collection of superhero comics and books, not many of the heroes have a disability or are in a wheelchair.

Local author Lindsay Stephenson decided to change all of that. She is releasing her new children’s book ‘My Mama is a Superhero’ on May 5 where the superhero is in a wheelchair with a disability.

Stephenson recalled her inspiration to write the book. It was a bedtime conversation with her daughter about her day at school.

“She had recounted that day at school, a friend asked her about my disability and my wheelchair and Ella told her in her opinion, my disability is not a limitation but a superpower,” she said.

Growing up, Stephenson noted that there were no superheroes on TV or in books that she could relate to as someone in a wheelchair with a disability.

From the conversation with Ella, Stephenson wanted to use that experience and inspiration to offer a children’s unique perspective on someone in a wheelchair with a disability.

“That's our hope is that we can create empowerment in those individuals that do see the representation and can relate to the characters and then just create acceptance for the kids or a greater understanding so that we can create greater acceptance moving forward,” Stephenson said.

The book is available for pre-order on Amazon now. You can learn more about Stephenson, her advocacy work with those with disabilities and her book at her website.
