Wednesday was National Tree Day, and the city of Moose Jaw celebrated by revealing the winner of the Tree of Significance program.

Each year the city takes time on this day to recognize a special tree in our area to help residence appreciate our urban forest.

This year the winner is the Manitoba Maple that grows in the middle of the Mosaic Community Food Farm. Sarah Regent, city gardener with the Parks department, talked about why this tree won.

"It has a really unusual shape and how it's got that one trunk that's fallen over. The location of it in the middle of the farm, it's got this natural bench and it's just a place that people naturally go to, to take a break from working on the farm, and really just admire the progress and all the food that's being grown down there. It's just a really neat place to gather, to collect yourself, and really appreciate the nature around you."

Regent said this is the perfect time of year to celebrate the trees of Moose Jaw.

"I definitely think its a well-placed week. All the trees are really starting to shine like they do in fall. All the leaves are changing colours. It's a really nice opportunity to pause for a moment and look at the trees. And by nominating the tree of significance in September and then unveiling the winner on National Tree Day, it just helps us to bring that extra little bit of attention to trees and the Urban Forest."

The city thanks all the people that submitted entries, and encourages everyone to check out their web page here to see this and all past trees of significance.
