The Moose Jaw Police Service is releasing more details regarding a standoff that started the week.

Commotion could be seen and heard near Elgin Park Monday evening as officers had the area blocked off and attempted to conduct a search warrant.

"We conducted a joint operation in order to execute a high-risk search warrant on a residence in the north-west area of Moose Jaw," explained Sgt. Kevin Pilsworth. "The search warrant was actually for evidence related to the homicide that had occurred on the 17th of August."

The situation quickly escalated as police noticed someone who was carrying a firearm, which upgraded the situation to a standoff between residents in the home and law enforcement.

"We intercepted a person leaving the residence who was found in possession of a loaded handgun. The persons believed to be inside the residence that we were looking at had a known history of violence and involvement in firearms."

With the search warrant originating from a murder that took place on Friday Sgt. Pilsworth said there isn't anything more that can be shared at this point.

"We're not releasing any names, given the nature of the investigation. The incident itself from (Monday) night, but also because of the fact that it's related to the homicide investigation we're not releasing any more information at this time."

When the Officers called the RCMP Critical Incident Unit for assistance and surrounded a home on the 800 block of 8th NW, setting up a large perimeter. Hours later, police were able to get everyone out of the home safely and arrested two people. One for a firearms related offense and a second for possession of meth.
