Two buildings located in Moose Jaw have been recognized for working towards a healthier planet and green initiatives.

The Davies Building in the downtown area was a finalist and Sask Polytechnic was the winner in the provincial Building Owners and Managers Association Earth Awards.

"The awards are to recognize sustainability as buildings, the energy conservation, how they are performing in terms of water management, air quality, comfort, health and wellness," explained Nancy Cherney the Assistant Deputy Minister of Property Management with the Ministry of Central Services. "The awards are presented by the BOMA Organization, so based on that criteria they select the award winners."

Sask Polytechnic won in the industrial office category for many significant reductions in energy and creating less waste.

"It is recognized for achieving a 25% reduction in waste, using 35% less energy than the average Canadian college or university and 50% less water is used at that campus compared to the national BOMA best average for similar buildings."

Even though it didn't take the top spot the Davies building, which is home to the Provincial Court House, succeeded as a finalist.

"The energy used at that facility is half of what the national average is for offices and the water use is an incredibly 80% less than the national average used in offices of similar type and size."

Some of the other areas the Davies building is highlighted was the energy efficient interior and exterior lighting assembly, along with low flow plumbing in their facilities.
