Being held in Moose Jaw for the first time – Our Voice, Our Province is coming to Moose Jaw on Saturday. The day is meant to inspire women to run for local government, school boards, Mayors, First Nations, Rural and Municipal councils.

Featuring Mayor of Warman – Sheryl Spense, Reeve of Weyburn Carmen Sterling, and Former Moose Jaw Mayor Deb Higgins, Counsellor Crystal Froese will also be in attendance taking part in the Q & A portion.

Crystal Froese told us all about the event.

"This is the very first year that this has been held in Moose Jaw. Its really all about being able to share with people who might be interested in running for local governance. Just to demystify some things by sharing our experiences."

"It's going to be held in the Moose Jaw Library in the beautiful theatre there. We are going to tackle a few interesting topics. It starts at 9:30 am and goes to 4 pm. Registration is $10 and that covers lunch, and we have a yoga instructor who's coming as well. It's going to be a really great day."

In Canada, women occupy 18% of mayors’ positions and 28% of councillors’ seats and Saskatchewan ranks in the bottom percentage.

"Stats actually tell us that across Canada there is a really low number of women who sit in elected positions as counsellors and mayors, and Saskatchewan ranks in the bottom end of that. Lots of times you just need a little tap on the shoulder and maybe even mentoring to think of yourself as someone who might be able to put your foot in that leadership role."

Everyone is welcome to attend the day-long event.
