You can expect to see numerous stop checks in and around Moose Jaw today (December 4).

RCMP, Moose Jaw Police, Highway Transport and CP Police are all involved with National Impaired Driving Awareness Day.

Sgt. Tim Schwartz with Moose Jaw RCMP reminds us that there are several consequences of drinking and driving.

"If (you're) fortunate not to be involved in an accident, that takes (you) down a route where you will lose your driver's license, have the vehicle impounded, there will be a court date and potentially lose (your) license for a year with fines up to $1000."

Schwartz says not only will they be on the lookout for drivers that have been drinking, but they'll be looking for other infractions that fall under what Schwartz calls "the big four".

"The main causes of death on highways include impaired driving, seatbelts, all aspects of speed, and distracted driving," Schwartz explained.

"From my perspective, I view driving as a privilege, not a right," he continued. "I know that everybody's in a rush, but it's always fair to say 'better to get there late than not get there at all'."
