Moose Jaw's Pat Simmons is sitting in a playoff spot with three games to go at the 2015 Canada Cup of Curling.

Simmons picked up a pair of wins on Thursday, beating Reid Carruthers, 5-4, and Brad Gushue, 6-4, to improve to 3-1 at the national tournament. That has him in a three-way tie for first place with Kevin Koe and Brad Jacobs.

In the afternoon draw, Simmons trailed for much of the match against Carruthers, but scored two in the tenth to come away with the one-point win.

Carruthers jumped in front with two in the second. After a blank in the third, Simmons tied the game with two in the fourth. The two sides traded singles in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Simmons held the hammer heading into the final end and benefited, getting the deuce for the win.

The local skip shot 94-percent in the win.

The evening draw saw Simmons go up against Gushue, needing a win to keep pace with Koe and Jacobs.

Gushue struck first with a single in the second end. There was blanks in the third and fourth, and that allowed Simmons to set up a score of three in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Gushue responded with one in the sixth to pull within one, but Simmons struck back with one in the seventh to retake the two-point lead heading into the eighth where Gushue was able to tie things up thanks to a deuce.

Simmons secured the win however with two in the ninth.

Simmons was even stronger in the second match of the day, hitting at 96-percent in the win over Gushue.

He'll look to carry over his strong play to Friday for a pair of games. Simmons will meet up with Steve Laycock in the morning draw at 9:30am and John Epping in the afternoon draw at 2:30pm.

He finishes the round robin on Saturday morning with a showdown against Koe at 9:00am.
