Four unanswered goals, including a natural hat trick by Nicole Kelly, led the Brantford Ice Cats past the Weyburn Gold Wings, 4-2, during day two action at the 2016 Esso Cup in Weyburn.

Moose Jaw’s Jensen Hammer and the Gold Wings drop to 0-2 at the female midget AAA national championship tournament after the loss.  

Hammer was held off the score sheet in the loss.

Maeve McGauley scored midway through the first period to open the scoring for Weyburn and Jenne Grube put the Gold Wings up 2-0 just 27 seconds into the second period, but they were unable to hold the lead.

Kayla Bailey got Brantford on the board 5:21 after Grube’s 2-0 goal and then Kelly’s first of the game tied things up just past the midway point of the frame.

Kelly gave Brantford their first lead of the game 4:37 into the third period and she completed the hat trick to seal the win with just over four minutes remaining in regulation.

Weyburn goalie Chanal Burke made 32 saves in the loss, while Emma Verbruggen turned away 26 shots for the win in the Ice Cats’ net.

Weyburn will look to get into the win column on Tuesday night when they host the Richelieu Express at 7 p.m.

The Saskatoon Stars are sitting in top spot at 2-0 after they knocked off the Express, 4-2, on Monday.  The Stars will battle the Rocky Mountain Raiders on Tuesday.
