I first met him just a few days into my radio career in 1985.  He had a presence.  People were drawn to him.  He was witty and wise and a wonderful orator.

Dr. Red Williams passed away at age 95 a few days ago.  The professor taught for more than 50 years at the University of Saskatchewan's Animal and Poultry Science Department.

Dr. Williams shared his wisdom with us for years, as you might recall, with U of S sponsored commentary called "Food for Thought."  His final commentary stopped me in my tracks and gave me shivers.

He said, "The time has come.  I'm now approaching 89 years old.  I've taught for 60 years and since nobody's going to tell me when to quit, that's it.  Thanks to all the people in the system who have carried my product and all the listeners that have made such kind remarks.  That's it.  Food for Thought.  And, I'm Red Williams."

The man retired with dignity.  I'll bet he died the same way.
