The contractors at SaskPower’s future Great Plains Power Station just south of the city are looking for local businesses and suppliers to get involved with the project.

The Chamber of Commerce hosted an event on Wednesday night with the main contractors working at the Great Plains Power Station.

The Chamber, Burns & McDonnel, PCL, and Graham invited local suppliers and service businesses to the Grant Hall Hotel for a meal, some drinks, and an announcement.

The evening started out with welcoming words from Chamber CEO Rob Clarke but then the microphone turned over to Brad Butcher from Burns & McDonnel.

Butcher explained that over 600 workers are working at the site from across Saskatchewan and Canada.

Many of those workers are local to Moose Jaw.

Clarke and Butcher were very proud that over 20% of the site’s employees are from Moose Jaw, which is over 140 employees in total and over 80% of the employees are Saskatchewan based. The project has also purchased and is utilizing over 99 local businesses and it’s making donations to 11 different local charities and scholarships.

In late May, some major equipment showed up on the site including the main gas turbine.

Now that the equipment has arrived and the construction process is continuing to ramp up, the Chamber and the main contractors are looking for local businesses to help support the workers.

The event was used to put the word out for local suppliers and businesses to get involved.

They’re looking for room and board services, grocery services or restaurants, clothing services, and even haircutting services.

“We’re looking for businesses able to support the current contracts we have out there to be able to execute the work,” says Butcher.

Not only are they looking for businesses but painting companies, electricians, pipefitters, and welders are also needed.
