“Community Clean Up Day” will be happening on Sunday, May 5.

People of all ages in Moose Jaw are invited to come together and beautify the city by picking up garbage from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the day.

Those who gather outside the Moose Jaw Co-op Marketplace will be supplied with garbage bags from the Community Clean Up Committee, and will receive a voucher for the “thank you” barbecue to be held at the Moose Jaw Co-op.

If you don’t have a cleanup area in mind, the committee will assign one to you.

Those participating on the day can use the hashtag #CleanUpMJ on any Facebook or Instagram posts about the cleanup.

“We’re just really encouraging people to get out – either individually, as families, as service groups – to clean up maybe an area they feel needs extra attention,” said Heather Eby, the city council representative on the Community Clean Up Committee.

“It’s just a day to get everyone thinking about it, but really, we’re hoping that the cleanup doesn’t happen just one day – that it happens all year long.”

Eby explained her passion for participating in picking up trash. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always felt that it was important to pick up litter and be sure that our communities are clean. Now I have grandchildren, and they often notice litter lying around. I just feel like we need to do our part to keep our community and our whole world clean.”

She added that while the “Community Clean Up Day” is a chance to get people to consider the importance of a cleaner city, she hopes that people take initiative year-round. “It’s a very simple way to make our community better. If everybody did their part – if everybody picked up three pieces of litter every time they went outside, we would have a much cleaner city.”

Residents or groups who would like to participate can reach out to cleanup@moosejaw.ca and let the committee know what area of the city you’d like to focus on during the cleanup day.
