Sask. Ag and Food is suggesting pulling your cattle off of pasture land a little early this fall to save some cover for the winter.

Ranchers are being advised to check their pastures closely as they prepare for the fall and winter months in southern Saskatchewan.

Trevor Lennox is the Forage Development Specialist for Sask. Ag and Food and says in some cases producers may want to pull animals out early. "Rather than let the cows hammer or pound the pasture into the ground... its better to pull your cattle early and if you hit your pasture really, really hard it definitely affects you the following year. So, you're better off to lead some carry over and some residue out there to catch some snow."

Lennox says ranchers will be looking for extra feed and may want to talk to area farmers who are looking at options for their drought-affected crop.
