A 17-year-old male made an appearance in Swift Current Provincial Court this afternoon on charges including making/possessing explosives.

The young offender, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was on probation from a conviction for possessing a weapon - a pipe bomb - dangerous to the public.

The Swift Current City RCMP attended the residence for a probation check and found an improvised explosive device, some other weapons, and a small amount of crystal meth.

The male wasn't at the residence during the check. RCMP 'F' Division's Explosive Disposal Unit helped destroy the device. Police arrested the male with the help of the Swift Current Police Dog Service Section following a short foot chase when the youth returned to the residence around 8:45 a.m.

The 17-year-old was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, make/possess explosives and possession of methamphetamine.

There are also three counts of failing to comply with a sentence or disposition under Section 137 of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He hasn't had a show-cause hearing and remains in custody. He waived delay and will appear again in Swift Current Provincial Court by video link on March 6.
