Last night, Regina's City Council passed its regulations for ride-sharing. This has some wondering when such regulations will be approved in Moose Jaw.

Councillor Dawn Luhning asked that very question last night at Moose Jaw City Council.

"I'm going to let Council know that I'm going to keep asking at every council meeting we're at. I do think it's important for the city and I would just like to know if we've come up with a timeline as to when that might be brought back to us."

Moose Jaw City Clerk/Solicitor Myron Gulka-Tiechko said they are working on it, but there is still lots that has to be done.

"It will likely be a few weeks, but we expect that we'll be taking the report to Executive Committee on how we approach licensing of that function."

"If you're licensing somebody to offer rides, what is the licensing of the people doing the rides? Do we have any safety concerns? Are there any issues with respect to criminal record checks? Any of those things. That's all stuff we have to consider before we can bring this to Council."

One of the reasons it has taken so long to have ride-sharing services approved is because it involves creating a new bylaw so that the service can be allowed.

"You can't just instantly produce bylaws. You have to understand how they comply with provincial safety regulations and SGI licensing. We have to basically have legal authority to do these bylaws."

The report is expected to be brought up once again in the coming weeks.
