Moose Jaw City Council is waiting for a report on possible changes to the requirements to sit on their various boards and committees. While that process is underway, one councillor wants more focus put on the members being a resident of the city.

"The city of Moose Jaw has numerous boards, commissions and third-party boards ranging from the Heritage Advisory Board and Special Needs Advisory Board and those level of boards have a budget of $1000, right up to the Police Commission that has a budge to over $9 million," said Councillor Brian Swanson.

"I would have thought that it would have been a normal course of action that (for) city council to appoint people boards that represent the citizens of Moose Jaw, that they be residents of Moose Jaw."

Swanson says he's learned of one situation where that's not the case but didn't get into detail. He did say that on the boards where the region of Moose Jaw was impacted that residents from the area still be allowed, if that was already outlined in the group's mandate, such as the Airport Authority.

Councillor Dawn Luhning pointed out that a review was already underway and it would be inappropriate to pass a rule change without first going through the entire process.

"I'm not opposed to this and I think it's a good idea to have residents of Moose Jaw contributing to the boards that they're on," said Luhning. "I just don't want to past his and then we go over this in January and determine that something different is going to happen with these committees and boards."

Council has referred the motion to the overall review of the board appointees that is expected to happen in January.
