Wednesday was the last day of school for the Prairie South School Division in Moose Jaw and the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division will follow suit on Thursday.

Many are excited for the summer holidays, but officials want to remind us that although children won't be in class, they may still be on school grounds. Schoolyard safety is still a summertime priority.

"We know that schoolyards, playgrounds and parks are still busy places for active children of all ages," said Christine Niemczyk, Director of Communications with CAA Saskatchewan. "We ask motorists to please drive with caution, reduce your speed, observe the posted speed limit and regulated days and hours that those speed limits are in effect."

She encouraged youth to take safety into their own hands by avoiding running out into traffic or between parked cars and to be aware of their surroundings, looking up from their phones while walking.

"When you're walking, cycling or playing please don't use your cell phone for texting, phoning or gaming. Be alert, keep your head up and always be aware of your surroundings."

Niemczyk also added that she hopes parents will have conversations with their children at the start of summer on how to be safe and why it's important to do things like look both ways before you cross the street.
