There will be a very special ceremony taking place at 15 Wing this Saturday, as the Saskatchewan Dragoons hold their celebration of the consecration of the guidon.

Sgt Steven Cox is the Unit Public Affairs Representative for the Saskatchewan Dragoons, and he explained what exactly the guidon is and its significance.

"It is the traditional colours of an armoured or cavalry regiment and it displays the battles won. For the Saskatchewan Dragoons this is all of our battles won since the beginning of our lineage. For example, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, the Somme, Ypres. We are adding the Afghanistan battle honour toward it."

Members of the public are welcome to attend the parade which is set to start at 1:30 pm, but residents are encouraged to be seated at 1:15.

"You'll see the Saskatchewan Dragoons in majority of its entirety. We will have an honour guard to help march on the guidon. We will have the brigade and division commanders, what's called the old guard. Former service members, and any former service member may participate in the old guard if you served with the Saskatchewan Dragoons."

Following the parade, the 100th Anniversary of Valenciennes Dinner will take place at the Moose Jaw Armouries. The event is not open to the public, but Sgt Cox explained what will take place.

"It will be a formal dining in military style dinner. There will be a live band that will play regimental marches, a bunch of ceremonial things will take place including marching on the colours, special toasts and drinks throughout the night, as well as a full course meal."

The retired guidon will be hung at City Hall for all to view.
