With Christmas fast approaching, and everyone rushing to get everything done, it may be a good idea to take time and make sure you're doing everything safe.

Cathy Bassett, the Moose Jaw Fire Department's Public Safety Officer has a few tips to keep in mind this holiday season.

One tip she has is to keep an eye on everything while you're in the kitchen.

"One of the biggest causes of fires is cooking, because we're doing, a lot of cooking, its hectic, we're doing so many multi task at this time of the year, and we're tired at this time of year because there's so much going on," warned Bassett. "Make sure you stay in the kitchen while you're cooking, make sure you have timers going if you have cookies in the oven."

She also had some tips on decorating with lights, but also keeping the tree safe.

"Make sure you use light strands that are CSA approved, and make sure they they are new, not frayed," said Bassett. "Don't plug in too many lights together, too many strands, because the more that you have plugged in together could cause electrical fires."

"If you're choosing a fresh tree make sure the green needles don't fall off when touched. Before placing it in the stand cut two inches from the base of the trunk, add water to the tree stand and be sure to water it daily."

Bassett and the Fire Department wants everyone to have a safe and happy holidays, so taking a few extra minutes to make sure things are in working order, can make all the difference.
