After years in the works, an organ donor registry within the province of Saskatchewan will see direct government approval and funding.

This announcement on the recent provincial budget allowed the opportunity for an organ donor registry to become a reality. The organ donor registry will work in conjunction with the current organ donation system and will increase awareness of the importance of organ as well as tissue donation. It will also ensure fewer opportunities for donation are missed in the future.

The registry will have a possibility of being tied in with presumed consent in the future; however, nothing has been announced. An increase in organ donors is expected from the program, but the numbers will be tallied and reported after enough input is received.

The organ donor registry will complement Green Shirt Day, a day of memorial for former Humboldt Bronco Logan Boulet, which is slated for April 7th. His decision to become an organ donor spurred thousands into action across Canada.

Regardless of what caused the decision to be moved forward at this time, the registry will provide ample opportunity for the Ministry of Health to gain as many organ donors as possible.
