Sporting rainbow colours can sometimes mean you're showing support to the LGBTQ community, and there's about to be a little more support in downtown Moose Jaw.

Last week the local pride group received approval from City Council at their last meeting at City Hall, saying they had approval to paint a city bench rainbow colours and also to host a beverage garden during Pride week.

Executive Director, Joe Wickenhauser, detailed the want for a rainbow bench and what the meaning behind it is.

"One reason was to draw some visability to the store, one was to help create something beautiful in the downtown area, and another was to raise awareness about gender and sexual diversity," detailed Wickenhauser.

"Specifically what they call buddy benches and these buddy benches are typically considered to help to build communities and address bullying. Often, when someone comes and sits on these buddy benches another person may come and check in on them to see if they're doing okay."

Wickenhauser noted that they realize it's become quite popular to paint a rainbow crosswalk in various communities; however, they wanted to go the extra mile and think of something a little different.

"Our committee felt like this was a great idea and also a good alternative to some of the rainbow crosswalks that we've been seeing. (It's) a very popular idea, we felt that Moose Jaw could do something a little bit more unique."

Moose Jaw's Pride Week will take place later this month starting on July 22nd and running throughout the rest of the week.
