It isn't uncommon to find unwanted furniture, appliances and construction materials lying in a ditch on the outskirts of Moose Jaw. Dumping it there is illegal, but that's not always a deterrent.

Rural littering is an issue around Moose Jaw according to RM Administrator Mike Wirges.

"We generally get calls in the office I'd say on a monthly basis, more specific to the large accumulation of garbage in one particular area – for example someone who's moving out of an apartment or a house, they seem to find it convenient to stop alongside a rural road thinking they can just dump their garbage out."

"According to our General Penalty Bylaw, fines could be up to $5000. In a number of cases they've actually found information contained within the garbage as far as who owns it, and they've had a number of embarrassing followup calls with the individuals who were caught dumping the garbage."

Wirges continues by saying RM workers are in charge of taking time out of their daily routine to go clean any garbage that is found.

If you see anyone littering or want to report trash, Wirges tells us who to call.

"Generally they can contact our office here. If they can get the licence plate of the individual, we highly recommend they call the RCMP directly and again provide specifics like the date, the time, the licence plate and the location. I encourage people to utilize the services that their taxes are paying for and the city landfill for the dumping of garbage."
