If you have been thinking of adding a kitten to your family, now is a great time.

The Humane Society has many to choose from, in fact their numbers climb quite a bit this time of year.

Dana Haukass, Executive Director of the Moose Jaw Humane Society, said it's the season when their numbers jump.
"From January 1st until April 30th this year we took in 8 kittens. That's a cat from 0 to 8 weeks old. And from May 1st until today, we took in 26 kittens within that same age category. That's over 3 times the number of cats, and that number doesn't include any of the mamma cats and kittens that are not here at the shelter. So we have another 12 kittens that are in foster care."

Adoption is a great way to help with the growing population of kittens and cats, and takes the pressure off of our local Humane Society.
"We have kittens at the shelter that are still waiting for a home, as well as the ones in foster care. Over the next 4 weeks those kittens will be coming back to the shelter roughly 2 weeks apart until they are all here or hopefully have homes. Those kittens will be a $125 adoption fee. $100 of that is refunded after you've had the kitten spayed or neutered after 6 months of age. The $25 goes towards covering their vaccinations and microchip while they're here with us. And the adult cat adoption fee is $50, and all of the adult cats are spayed, neutered, started on vaccinations and micro chipped. And any cat that is a senior cat, so over 8 years of age, is $25, which includes the micro chipping, any vaccines they've received and they will also be spayed or neutered."

If you own a cat, it's very important that you have them spayed or neutered. It helps to control those numbers of batches of kittens that come into the shelter. If you do find a stray cat, contact the shelter and bring it in to them as soon as possible. They are located at 1755 Stadacona St west.
