Sentancing began Monday in Melfort at the Kerry Vickar Centre for Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, the semi driver involved in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

Many families were present as well as friends and other loved ones to share their victim impact statements before the court today.

The hearing is expected to last up to as many as five days.

Thomas Healy the Crown Prosecutor on the trial shared some closing remarks.

"This has been a very difficult and emotional day for everyone involved, especially for the survivors', the families, and their friends. The victim impact statements that were read in the court today and placed before the court, they were truly powerful, heartbreaking, and difficult to describe. I would like the thank the families who were willing to let their voices be heard today and to express themselves in this process, we know it was difficult."

Scott Thomas, Evan Thomas' father, shared his victim impact statement in court on Monday.

Over 70 impact statements are to be entered into the court with 65 of them being read aloud.

Thomas was one of those who chose to read his in court.

He explained the feelings leading up to his turn to read.

"It was intense, the lead up to it your heart skips a few beats, your mouth goes dry, and then you just find your place."

Thomas also noted that it was more emotional to hear other people read theirs than to present his.

"I cried more listening to other peoples statements than I did giving my own. You know what your dealing and you have an idea what everyone else is dealing with but to hear them articulate it and put it into their own words it's powerful stuff. The sisters and girlfriends today that's a reality that I don't have."

Day two of court will continue Tuesday with more impact statements being entered into the court at 10 am in Melfort.
