As part of Public Works Week declared by the City, residents and students got a chance to experience what City workers do with a "Power of Public Works" celebration.

Students from four separate elementary schools were not only transported to the celebration at the City Complex on High Street by city buses, but they also got a chance to get up close to city workers and the machinery they have, which all the kids were excited about.

"As we were driving up, they were so excited to sit on a city bus," said Kailey Anuik, a Grade 1 Teacher at St. Mary's Elementary School. "Some of them ride the school bus but some of them have never ridden a bus before, so that was a pretty big thrill for them, and then as we were coming and they saw the big machinery they were pretty excited to be able to sit on it and experience that."

Throughout their visit, kids got a chance to wear safety gear, play games, go into the City's heavy equipment, paint a bulldozer blade,  and learn more about public works. There was even face painting. All of which was run by City workers.

Not only were students excited to see all the equipment, but workers were also excited to give kids all these opportunities.

"It's really nice to have the kids here," explained Jessica Craig, a Water and Waste Water Department Permanent Skilled Labour with the City of Moose Jaw. "They always seem to be interested when we're on site and they always want to come close but obviously they can't {be] on site, so it's nice to give them the opportunity to come and see everything up close and kinda get to know how it works."

Workers from all departments (Streets and Roads, Solid Waste, Bridges, Water and Wastewater, Public Transportation, Parks and Green Space Maintenance) were there to show off their equipment, and all were happy to get the recognition this week.

"Some of the public, they don't really know how we function and sometimes they get misconstrued about what we do," Craig added. "So it's nice to have a chance to show the public what we do and how we do it and how we operate and give them our take on it as opposed to just their own thoughts."

The City was not only able to show off what their workers do, but they also raised funds for Transition House through a BBQ.

It was declared earlier this week that May 20th to the 26th will be Public Works Week in Moose Jaw.
