A goal-line stand in the final minute gave the Vanier Vikings their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon in the Moose Jaw High School Football League.

Vanier scored early and held on late for a 17-15 win over the Weyburn Eagles at Gutheridge Field to improve to 1-4 this season. The Eagles fall to 1-3 with the loss.

"We've been battling the last couple of weeks and couldn't put enough plays together to win, so to be able to make the stop down there when we needed to and get a win was huge. The execution needs to be better, but we’ll take the win," said Vanier head coach Ryan Gottselig after the game.

Tyler Lorenz, who was making his first start at quarterback, got Vanier on the board with a 62-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and then he connected with Cole Coroy for a 58-yard score later in the first quarter.

The Vikings held defensively after that to finally find their way into the win column.

"It feels awesome, it was a tough first few games, four games in two weeks doesn't give anyone much time to improve, so we were just grinding in practices trying to get our stuff together and it came together really nice," said Coroy, who finished with three catches for 86 yards and one carry for four yards.

Lorenz completed five-of-six passes for 111 yards with one interception, while also rushing 23 times for 45 yards.

Weyburn running back Chase Fillmore opened the scoring on the afternoon with a 14-yard touchdown just under three minutes into the game.

Vanier led 15-7 at halftime and the Eagles didn't find the end zone again until the third quarter when quarterback Brett Bowler scrambled for an eight-yard touchdown. They missed on the two-point convert, keeping the Vikings in front by one.

The Vikings picked up a safety from defensive back Alex Digeralamo with 40 seconds left in the third quarter and that proved to be the winning points.

Weyburn controlled the ball for much of the fourth quarter and drove down to Vanier's goal line in the final minute, but they were stopped on three plays for the end zone as the Vikings' defence held.

Vanier surrendered a safety to move the ball back into Weyburn territory and they sealed the win with a couple of knockdowns.

Gottselig said the Vikings knew they were going to have to dig in on that final push from the Eagles.

"We knew that they were going to come out and run it, that's what they do, Fillmore is a good runner and they have that huge offensive line, so I just said drop your pads and run to the ball, it's pretty basic football and they stepped up and did it," said Gottselig.

Fillmore had a huge day on the ground for the Eagles with 156 yards on 26 carries, while Bowler was 7-of-17 for 64 passing yards and he added 16 rushing yards.

"I'm proud of my brothers, they played so hard and we'd obviously like a better outcome out of this, I could have played harder, but we stuck together and we had a pretty good game," said Bowler in the loss.

"It was a high intensity and that’s what we want going forward and we didn't give up, no matter what the score was, we fought hard."
